Saint Benedict (480 - 547)

Benedict was born in 480 in Nursia, a small town near the Apennines. When he was seventeen years old, his parents sent him to finish his education in Rome. The rather dry study of rhetoric, however, did not satisfy his thirst for the ultimate truth… “As the deer longs for living water, so my soul is thirsting for Thee, O my God. My soul is thirsting for the living God.”

Father Muard (1809-1854)

Jean-Baptiste Muard was born on April 24th, 1809 at Vireaux (Yonne). His parents were farm workers. He soon learned all about poverty, but even as a young man, he declared : “I would like to be a missionary and die a martyr.”

Dom Romain Banquet (1840-1929)

Louis Banquet was born in 1840. After studies at the Seminary in Albi, he entered la Pierre-qui-Vire in 1864. Father Muard had been dead nine years, but the young Louis wrote : “I perceived in the fullness of my soul the victorious odour of sanctity which the servant of God had left in this desert…”
